Historically used to support the gastric mucosa,2 studies have shown glycyrrhetic acid helps maintain high levels of prostaglandins in the stomach by blocking the activity of two enzymes involved in the metabolism of prostaglandins E and F2-alpha, resulting in extra protection for the gastric mucosa.[2] In chewable doses of 760 mg a day for one month, DGL was found to be superior to placebo in promoting a healthy and protective GI mucosa.2 In a study of 874 patients comparing the effects of DGL and cimetidine (another known therapy), it was found that DGL was effective in relieving minor GI discomfort.3
